toys

today i got alex a happy meal.  the toy they have right now is smurfs.  this takes me back to when i was a kid and i collected little smurf dolls and figures.  what does alex say?

"i wish this toy did something?"

did something?  like spin? talk? walk? twirl? run?

why do toys have to do something?  what happened to kids using their imaginations and making the toys "do something"?

i got to thinking.  most of the toys he plays with make noise, transform, or move in some way.  even his power ranger action figures have moving parts.  he has to use some imagination when he plays with them, but not much.

what happened?

when i was little i played with barbies all the time.  i had different families, complex plots, drama, action. it all came from my imagination.  the barbie didn't do much.  it just acted as a medium for me to act things out.  why can't alex do this with his smurfs that he got at mcdonalds?  why can't he act out a story with them?  make them talk and have adventures?

things sure have changed...
