L-O-V-E

last night i stepped outside my comfort zone and went and listened to a rabbi talk about love.  it's a 3 part series on love, marriage, and sex.  he looks at what the torah and judaism say about the subject matter.  i ended up finding it interesting.

first of all, i was one of the youngest ones there, which was weird.  there were some couples there too, which i guess is good.  maybe they have stuff to work on.  there was one annoying person (guess every class has 'em) that kept butting in and disagreeing with the rabbi.  i tried my best to tune her out and listen to the message.

he told a story that basically said a lot of people treat love as a selfish thing--what do I get out of it?  how does this person make ME feel?  i can see that.  when we have those feelings we focus on how good we feel.  he explained that the root of the hebrew word for love means to give/to take.  so, love is a two way street.  you have to invest yourself into this other person, and he/she has to invest in you.  makes sense.  so the goal is to find a person who wants what you want--to invest him/herself into someone else.  but how do you find that?  i hope he tells us next week.

the rabbi did talk about interfaith relationships not working.  he mentioned that it is best to find someone who shares your values.  he also suggested looking for someone in your community, which i'm not sure about because i don't interact or participate in anything in my community.
