i just saw another article about how facebook has caused outrage in the media and upset in someone's life. this time it was an israeli soldier who had her picture taken with palestinian prisoners who were bound and blindfolded. she is no longer in active duty, but they are posted on her facebook page. she is smiling in the pictures and makes off color remarks in the comments section.
then there was the whole russian spy scandal. i didn't understand all that, but that one spy had pictures of herself all over facebook.
and i can't tell you how many times my mom has told me that someone's facebook profile/pictures ruined his/her career. it happens all the time. drunk photos are seen by the wrong people. or worse, someone posts pictures of him/herself barely clothed and in a compromising position.
then there are the stalkers (i'm guilty of this--i'll admit it, but i mean no harm and i've NEVER made the news!). they watch a person's facebook page and status updates for when they won't be home and then rob them blind or murder them when they are home or something like that.
but, we never hear what good facebook can do. at least i don't. how about the times where people are reunited after years apart? it could be family members or friends who haven't seen each other in a long time. or does the media ever mention how easy facebook has made it to plan an event. you just post it up there by typing a few things and clicking on a couple of things and then, BAM! you have an event page and all your guests can keep up with what will be happening and who will be there.
facebook does a lot of great things, but the media only tells us about the bad. how can we get the skeptics to see the good that social media sites do?
btw--there is a movie called Social Media coming out in October. i forget which famous actor is playing the president of facebook, but i think it'll be a good movie, and will hopefully be positive!
